Historical Legacy

The Zollicoffer Institute

The Zollicoffer Institute was erected by the members of Zollicoffer Lodge #444 and stood on the grounds in Bluff City where the elementary school was later built. More than just a lodge project, the Institute became a cornerstone of education in the community, serving generations of students in the Bluff City area.

The Institute was led by several distinguished educators, including:

  • Reverend William B. Gale
  • W.B. Bachman - Methodist Minister
  • John J. Wolford

In 1916, a new building was constructed, and the institution transitioned into what became known as Bluff City High School. Until 1932, the school served dual roles as both an elementary and high school, reflecting its importance to the educational life of the community.

May 19, 1812 - January 19, 1862

Newspaper Editor U.S. Congressman Brigadier General

Felix Kirk Zollicoffer was born on May 19, 1812, a descendant of Swiss immigrants who settled in North Carolina around 1710. His grandfather, George Zollicoffer, served as a captain during the Revolutionary War, instilling a tradition of public service that would define the family for generations.

Zollicoffer built a distinguished civilian career as a newspaper editor and politician in Tennessee, serving three terms as a U.S. Congressman. Known for his moderate views and dedication to his constituents, he was a respected figure in Tennessee public life.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Zollicoffer was commissioned as a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. He led the first Confederate invasion of eastern Kentucky, commanding forces in a strategically vital theater of the war. On January 19, 1862, he was killed in action at the Battle of Mill Springs, becoming the first Confederate general to fall in the Western Theater of the conflict.

Brigadier General Zollicoffer was laid to rest in the Old City Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee. His legacy endures through the institutions and landmarks that bear his name, including our lodge, which honors his memory and his family's longstanding ties to the region.
